Victron Smart BMS CL 12-100
The Smart BMS CL 12-100 is a Battery Management system for Victron lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) Smart Batteries. It has been specifically designed for 12V systems with a 12V generator.
The BMS CL 12-100 monitors and protects each individual battery cell within the battery (or battery bank) and will disconnect the generator, charge sources or DC loads in case of low battery voltage, high battery voltage or over temperature.
The dedicated generator input provides current limiting and one-way traffic from the generator into the battery, this so any size generator (and start battery) can be safely connected to the Smart Lithium battery or batteries.
The BMS is also equipped with a remote on off connector, to turn the BMS (and the system) off via a remote switch, and a pre-alarm contact, to give a warning signal before the BMS will disconnect the batteries from the system.

The Smart BMS 12-200 is a Smart Battery Management system (BMS) for Victron lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) Smart Batteries.A Smart BMS that protects the alternator (and wiring), and supplies up to 200A in any DC load (including inverters and inverter/chargers) and is intended for use with Victron Smart LiFePo4 batteries with M8 circular connectors. It supports up to 10 batteries in parallel (BTVs are simply daisy-chained).
Starter battery Protection
This function is similar to that of a Cyrix Battery Combiner or Argo FET Battery Isolator. Current can flow to the LFP battery only if the input voltage (= voltage on the starter battery) exceeds 13V. Additionaly, current cannot flow back from the LFP battery to the starter battery, thus preventing eventual damage to the LFP battery due to excessive discharge.
Alternator and battery protection
The input current is electronically limited to approximately 90% of the fuse rating. A 100A fuse, for example, will therefore limit the input current to approximately 90A.
Choosing the right fuse will:
- Protect the LFP battery against excessive charge current (important in case of a low capacity LFP battery).
- Protect the alternator against overload in case of a high capacity LFP battery bank (most 12V alternators will overheat and fail if running at maximum output during more than 5 minutes).
Load/battery charger output-input (Power Port SYSTEM+)
This Power Port can be used to either charge or discharge the LFP battery (i.e. via a charger, an inverter or inverter/charger) with a maximum continuous current of 200A in both directions. Can also be used as a load output, thus DC loads can be connected directly to this port. The port is short-circuit protected with a peak discharge current of 400A.
The Smart BMS will make sure that the battery discharge will cut-off in case of imminent cell under voltage.
The Smart BMS will enable charging through this port, but no charge algorithm can be applied internally.
Li-ion battery protection
Excessive input voltage and transients are regulated down to a safe level. The Smart BMS will stop charging in case of cell over voltage or over temperature. It has three outputs, similar to the smallBMS:
Load Disconnect output
The Load output is normally high and becomes free floating in case of imminent cell under voltage (default 2,8V/cell, adjustable on the battery between 2,6V and 2,8V per cell). Maximum current: 10mA. The Load output can be used to control the remote on/off input of a Battery Protect, inverter, DC-DC converter or other loads.
Pre-Alarm output
The pre-alarm output can be used as warning when the battery voltage is low and it will trip shortly before the Load Disconnect output is disabled due to cell under voltage.
The pre-alarm output may be used to drive a relay, LED or Buzzer. It can be configured as continuous or intermittent signal.
The pre-alarm output is normally free floating and becomes high in case of imminent cell under voltage (default 3,1V/cell, adjustable on the battery between 2,85V and 3,15V per cell). Maximum current: 1A (not short circuit protected.)
The minimum delay between pre-alarm and load disconnect is 30 seconds.
Charge disconnect output
The Charger output is normally high and becomes free floating in case of imminent cell over voltage or over temperature. Maximum current: 10mA. The Charger output is not suitable to power an inductive load such as a relay coil. The Charger output can be used to control: The remote on/off of a charger, a Cyrix-Li-Charge relay, a Cyrix-Li-ct Battery Combiner.
(Note: in some cases, an interface cable will be needed, please see the manual.)
A non-inverting or inverting on/off cable may be required
Remote on/off input, also configurable as system on/off
The remote on/off input controls the charging via the alternator, while the BMS functionality will remain active regardless of the remote on/off state. The remote on/off can also be used as system on/off switch. This can be configured with VictronConnect. The remote on/off (or system on/off) consists of two terminals: Remote L and Remote H. A remote on/off switch or relay contact can be connected between L and H. Alternatively, terminal H can be switched to battery plus, or terminal L can be switched to battery minus.

The VE.Bus BMS is a Battery Management Systems (BMS) designed to interface with and protect a single, or multiple Victron Lithium Battery 12,8V & 25,6V Smart (LiFePO4 or LFP) in systems that have Victron inverters or inverter/chargers with VE.Bus communication. It monitors and protects the batteries against over voltage and under voltage of any individual cell, and also over temperature or under temperature conditions.
Based on the status of the battery or batteries, the BMS will:
- Generate a pre-alarm signal to alert of an imminent cell under voltage condition.
- Disable inverting in VE.Bus inverters or inverter/chargers via VE.Bus, and disable other loads via the ‘Load Disconnect’ terminal in the event of a cell under voltage condition.
- Disable charging in VE.Bus inverters or inverter/chargers via VE.Bus and disable other chargers via the ‘Charge Disconnect’ terminal in the event of a cell overvoltage, under temperature or over temperature condition.
This “original” VE.Bus BMS, is best used in systems without a GX device.
Protects each individual cell of a Victron lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP) battery
Each individual cell of a LiFePO4 battery must be protected against over voltage, under voltage and over temperature. Victron LiFePO4 batteries have integrated Balancing, Temperature and Voltage control (acronym: BTV) and connect to the VE.Bus BMS with two M8 circular connector cord sets.
The BTVs of several batteries can be daisy chained. Up to five batteries can be paralleled and up to four batteries can be series connected (BTVs are simply daisy-chained) so that a 48V battery bank of up to 1500Ah can be assembled. Please see our LiFePO4 battery documentation for details.
The BMS will:- Shut down or disconnect loads in case of imminent cell under voltage,
- Reduce charge current in case of imminent cell overvoltage or over temperature
- Shut down or disconnect battery chargers in case of imminent cell overvoltage or over temperature.
Protects 12V, 24V and 48V systems
The operating voltage range of the BMS: 9 to 70V DC.
Communicates with all VE.Bus products
The VE.Bus BMS connects to a MultiPlus, Quattro or Phoenix inverter with a standard RJ45 UTP cable. Other products, without VE.Bus, can be controlled as shown below:
Load Disconnect
The Load Disconnect output is normally high and becomes free floating in case of imminent cell under voltage (default 3,1V/cell, adjustable on the battery between 2,85V and 3,15V per cell).
Maximum current: 2A.
The Load Disconnect output can be used to control- The remote on/off of a load, and/or
- The remote on/off of an electronic load switch (Battery Protect)
Pre-alarm
The pre-alarm output is normally free floating and becomes high in case of imminent cell under voltage (default 3,1V/cell, adjustable on the battery between 2,85V and 3,15V per cell).
Maximum current: 1A (not short circuit protected).
The minimum delay between pre-alarm and load disconnect is 30 seconds.Charge Disconnect
The Charge Disconnect output is normally high and becomes free floating in case of imminent cell over voltage or over temperature. Maximum current: 10mA. The Charge Disconnect output can be used to control
- The remote on/off of a charger and/or
- a Cyrix-Li-Charge relay and/or
- a Cyrix-Li-ct Battery Combiner

The SolidSwitch 104 is a small and super handy switch, especially useful to control an alternator, for example, a Balmar or Mastervolt Alpha-Pro, in a Victron lithium system. The SolidSwitch is wired in between the Allow-to-charge (ATC) contact from a BMS and the ignition. Its main advantage, over for example a relay, is the incredibly low power draw: 0.04 Ah per month, versus 21 Ah monthly of a typical 12V 1 Amp relay.
The SolidSwitch 104 switches DC loads of up to 70V/4A and can be controlled by a low power digital signal. It has three typical use cases:
- Control an external alternator regulator, such as a Balmar or Mastervolt Alpha pro in a Victron lithium system.
- Switch a DC load, such as a light. A low power control circuit, max current drawn will only be 100μA, can then control a load of up to 4 Amps.
- Increase the number of chargers that can be wired to the ATC (allow-to-charge) output of a Victron BMS
What is it that makes the SolidSwitch 104 unique?
The feature making it such a usable switch is its low current draw. The SolidSwitch will draw 0.04 Ah a month, while a small relay can easily take 10 Ah a month, or typically even 22 Ah (*). That reduction by a factor of 250 is crucial when using it in a lithium system to connect and control the alternator regulator: the control circuit will always be drawing its standby power. As well as when using it to increase the number of chargers that can be wired to a BMS ATC contact. By using a SolidSwitch rather than an ordinary relay, the parasitic load is reduced to the order of magnitude of the battery bank self
discharge. Note that, even when the batteries are fully charged, the ATC output of the BMS will still be enabled. And as such, control circuits such as a relay or in this case the SolidSwitch will be enabled and drawing power. Even when the charger or alternator is not charging. For this example, that means that when using a relay, the small relay draws 10Ah per month from the battery bank, even when the engine isn’t running. While the SolidSwitch only draws 04Ah, which is most likely far below the self-discharge of the batteries and thus neglectable.(*) If for example a 12V 1A relay with a 400 Ohm coil is used, the current draw will be 30mA, or 21.6 Ah per month.
SolidSwitch Compatible Load types
The DC load can be resistive, capacitive or inductive (such as the coil of a high-power contactor)

Integrated BMS and safety switch
The SuperPack batteries are extremely easy to install, needing no additional components such as an external BMS. The internal switch will disconnect the battery in case of over discharge, over charge or high temperature.
Abuse proof
A lead-acid battery will fail prematurely due to sulfation:
- If it operates in deficit mode during long periods of time (i.e. if the battery is rarely, or never at all, fully charged).
- If it is left partially charged or worse, fully discharged.
A Lithium-Ion battery does not need to be fully charged. Service life even slightly improves in case of partial charge instead of a full charge. This is a major advantage of Li-ion xompared to lead-acid. The SuperPack batteries will cut-off the charge or discharge current when the maximum ratings are reached.
Efficient
In several applications (especially off-grid solar), energy efficiency can be of crucial importance. The round-trip energy efficiency (discharge from 100% to 0% and back to 100% charged) of the average lead-acid battery is 80% however the round-trip energy efficiency of a Li-ion battery is 92%.
The charge process of lead-acid batteries becomes particularly inefficient when the 80% state of charge has been reached, resulting in efficiencies of 50% or even less in solar systems where several days of reserve energy are required (battery operating in 70% to 100% charged state). In contrast, a Li-ion battery will still achieve 90% efficiency even under shallow discharge conditions.
Can be connected in Parallel
The SuperPack Litium batteries can be connected in parallel to increase capacity. Series connection however is not allowed and will result in damaged batteries if done so.
