Book – Solar Success – Complete Guide to Home and Property Systems

    Contributor Bio:Rivers, Collyn
Originally trained as an RAF ground radar engineer, Collyn Rivers spent a brief time with de Havilland designing power systems for guided missiles, before becoming a test engineer at the Vauxhall/Bedford Motors Research Test Centre. He migrated to Australia in 1963, where he designed and built scientific measuring equipment. In 1971, Collyn Rivers founded what, by 1976, became the world’s largest-circulation electronics publication, Electronics Today International. From 1982 to 1990 he was technology editor of The Bulletin and also Australian Business magazines and in 1999 started two companies: Caravan and Motorhome Books, and Successful Solar Books (now RVBooks and SolarBooks). Anyone who has been an electronics enthusiast over the past 30 years or so will be well aware of Collyn Rivers. He was the founding editor of Electronics Today International (ETI) magazine which went on to have a number of very successful editions in the UK and elsewhere, as well as being very successful in Australia. Book – Caravan and Motorhome Electrics

    Publisher Marketing:
Caravan & Motorhome Electrics is the totally rewritten successor of the original globally selling Motorhome Electrics. The book’s content now also covers every aspect of designing, installing and fault finding of the electrics in fifth wheel and conventional caravans and camper trailers.

The book explains how things work, and what they do (not what vendors claim they do). It shows how to dramatically improve charging performance, successfully install solar, and reduce energy draw of electric (especially) three-way fridges.

Essentially it provides solutions proven to work, not suggestions that may work.

The author shows how the ongoing move fully voltage controlled alternators necessitates dc-dc alternator charging. And that, post 2016, regulations are likely to limit or even preclude alternator charging with new vehicles. It covers the solutions in depth: i.e. solar, plus fuel cell’s 24/7 power generation (light and compact yet silent and non-polluting (and now existing in LPG form), needing only a small battery for peak loads.

As with all Collyn’s books, the content is thoroughly researched, technically accurate, yet in plain English, plus explanatory illustrations, many of the author’s own vehicles.

The author’s background includes automobile research, electronics and large scale magazine publishing (including founding the world’s largest electronics magazine). He was technical editor of Australia’s The Bulletin magazine in the 1980s – and has supplied Tech Notes to The Wanderer for a now 14 years.

    • Low battery voltage cut-off and restart levels
    • Dynamic cut-off: load dependent cut-off level
    • Output voltage 210 – 245V
    • Frequency 50 Hz or 60 Hz
    • ECO mode on/off and ECO mode sense level

    Monitoring:

    • In- and output voltage, % load and alarms

    Proven reliability
The full bridge plus toroidal transformer topology has proven its reliability over many years.
The inverters are short circuit proof and protected against overheating, whether due to overload or high ambient temperature.

    High start-up power
Needed to start loads such as power converters for LED lamps, halogen lamps or electric tools.

    ECO mode
When in ECO mode, the inverter will switch to standby when the load decreases below a preset value (min load: 15W). Once in
standby the inverter will switch on for a short period (adjustable, default: every 2,5 seconds). If the load exceeds a preset level,
    the inverter will remain on.

    Remote on/off
A remote on/off switch can be connected to a two-pole connector, or between battery plus and the left-hand contact of the
    two-pole connector.

    LED diagnosis
Please see manual for a description.

To transfer the load to another AC source: the automatic transfer switch
For our low power inverters, we recommend our Filax Automatic Transfer Switch. The Filax features a very short switchover time
(less than 20 milliseconds) so that computers and other electronic equipment will continue to operate without disruption.

  • Victron Battery Monitor BMV-710H Smart

    Victron Battery Monitor BMV-710H Smart

Bluetooth inside – With Bluetooth built-in, the BMV Smart is ready for the Internet of Things (IoT) era. With Bluetooth being implemented in most other Victron Energy products, wireless communication between products will simplify system installation and enhance performance.

Download the Victron Bluetooth app- Use a smartphone or other Bluetooth enabled device to:
    – Customize settings
    – Monitor all important data on single screen
    – View historical data
    – Update the software when new features become available

Easy to install – All electrical connections are to the quick connect PCB on the current shunt. The shunt connects to the monitor with a standard RJ12 telephone cable. Included: RJ12 cable (10 m) and battery cable with fuse (2 m); no other components needed. Also included are a separate front bezel for a square or round display appearance, a securing ring for rear mounting and screws for front mounting.

Very low current draw from the battery – Current consumption: 0.7Ah per month (1mA) @12V and 0.6Ah per month (0.8mA) @ 24V Especially Li-ion batteries have virtually no capacity left when discharged until low voltage shutdown. After shutdown due to low cell voltage, the capacity reserve of a Li-ion battery is approximately 1Ah per 100Ah battery capacity. The battery will be damaged if the remaining capacity reserve is drawn from the battery. A residual current of 10mA for example may damage a 200Ah battery if the system is left in discharged state during more than 8 days.

    Other features:
    – Battery voltage, current, power, ampere-hours consumed and state of charge
    – Remaining time at the current rate of discharge
    – Programmable visual and audible alarm
    – Programmable relay, to turn off non critical loads or to run a generator when needed
    – 500 Amp quick connect shunt and connection kit
    – Shunt selection capability up to 10,000 Amps
    – VE.Direct communication port
    – Stores a wide range of historical events, which can be used to evaluate usage patterns and battery health
    – Wide input voltage range: 60 – 385V
    – High current measurement resolution: 10 mA (0.01A)
    – Additional input to measure voltage (of a second battery), temperature or midpoint voltage, and corresponding alarm and relay settings

  • Victron Battery Monitor BMV-712 BLACK Smart

Victron Battery Monitor BMV-712 BLACK Smart

The BMV-712 is the latest high precision battery monitor from Victron.
The BMV-712 monitors voltage and current of a single battery bank and calculates power, state-of-charge and time-to-go.
It also features an additional voltage input that can be used to measure an auxiliary or starter battery voltage, midpoint voltage or temperature with the optional temperature sensor.
Data can be transferred to smartphones or computers with the inbuilt bluetooth module and external alarms can be triggered with the relay contact.
Installation is simply a case of connecting the supplied shunt in the negative battery cable, mounting the monitor in a 52mm diameter hole and connecting the wires.
An optional wall enclosure is available if surface mounting is preferred.

  • Victron Galvanic Isolator VDI-64 A

    Victron Galvanic Isolator VDI-64 A

The galvanic isolator consists internally of two diodes which are connected in an anti-parallel fashion. When they are connected in this way, the diodes allow current in both directions but only above a certain threshold voltage. The voltage at which diodes conduct is about 1.4 Vdc. The isolator is installed directly behind your boat’s 230V connection.

The forward voltage from the galvanic isolator is higher than the potential difference between metals. As a result, this voltage will not allow conduction and as such, the galvanic isolator will prevent any electrolytic current. However, if there is a (higher) error voltage in the AC circuit, the diodes will allow current through and the residual-current device will break the circuit.

    Features:

    • Two Internal Diodes Connected in Anti-Parallel
    • Prevents Electrolytic Corrosion
    • Water Resistant
    • Soft Start
    • Low Noise and Low Weight
