Camping season is upon us, how prepped are you?

Are you getting your rig ready for the camping system? It is important to consider where you are going and what areas you are staying in so you can pick the right off-grid system.

Great things to check:

  • Battery size and chemistry?
  • Solar panel array – do you have enough to meet demands and avoid over discharge?
  • Do you require charging during long drives?
  • How remote are you going and are you prepared with multi charge sources?
  • What time of year are you traveling? Winter can be as low as 20% of the solar harvest your system is spec for.

If you’re traveling in the bush, nestled in the trees you will have a short time to charge your battery compared to a mining camp in the outback creeks with all day to harvest the suns energy.

Different batteries types may suit different regions. A lead acid battery will boil in warmer temperatures where as a lead carbon battery has a porous mat on the negative plate leading to 99.9% re-absorption providing a good reliable system in almost all weather conditions.

If you are traveling the outback in winter freezing temperatures and frosts can hit. Using a high quality charge controller with stop charge below 5 degrees, ensuring your batteries only charge when it safe to do so.

When traveling in a caravan your have options of non-powered and powered sites, these two options generally require two different size battery systems for powering your devices between sites where larger power and charge rates exist. If you’re adopting the nomad lifestyle and are spending much more time on the road or at un-powered sites you will need to bring your larger power and charge sources with you. This may mean extra batteries, DCDC chargers and a larger inverter will benefit your build.
